Visual Art

Four Learning Targets

1) Developing Creativity and Imagination

Students should be able to generate ideas through imagination and creativity by participating in art appraising, creating and performing activities.

2) Developing Skills and Processes

Students should be able to use different materials, elements, arts language and resources to experience and express the arts. Exploration and experimentation in the creative process should also be treasured in arts education.

3) Cultivating Critical Responses

Students should be able to appraise and respond to the arts and arts-related issues from multiple perspectives.

4) Understanding Arts in Context

Students should be able to understand the arts in context and their relationship with human life and society.

Curriculum Characteristics

  1. Students achieve the goal and four learning targets in the Visual Arts curriculum through the integration of art appreciation and criticism, art making and art knowledge.
  1. Students learn in thematic units, which allow them to investigate specific topics and develop a wider and deeper understanding.
  1. A variety of art media covering different diversified topics are provided to different students. Students with different potentials and specialties can explore and work on the media they are more interested in and skillful at. This helps students express their potential and cater to learner diversity.
  1. Through art appreciation and criticism, students are guided to observe art from different perspectives, form appropriate responses and analysis. Through appreciating a diversified collection of art and culture, students’ aesthetics and vision of arts can be broadened.
  1. While participating in art-making activities and competitions held in school and outside school, students are able to utilise their creativity and imagination to construct their own ideas and express their personal feelings and thoughts. This helps students develop visual cognition and increase their motivation towards art.
  1. Through cross-KLA and cross-subject learning, students can learn more effectively by connecting and applying knowledge and skills of Visual Arts in other disciplines.
  1. Students’ artwork is frequently exhibited to boost their confidence and sense of engagement.

Learning Targets of This School Year

  1. In addition to providing art lessons with diverse media and extracurricular courses, ceramic art is also incorporated into the regular curriculum this year, allowing students to experience the joy of pottery. Visual Arts teachers will also participate in ceramic workshops to learn about the techniques involved in pottery creation.
  1. ‘My Arts Book’ in Primary 1-6 is used in order to motivate students to explore and apply knowledge of visual arts as well as improving their self-regulated learning.
  1. To hold diversified artistic creation activities and competition, expand the potential of students, and let them enjoy the happiness brought by visual art, providing students with a learning experience that is rich and flexible, in order to gain a feeling of achievement.
  1. To allow students to understand and utilize digital media for creating and communicating– Nearpod, Digital painting (Sketchbook、Pixilart), Metaverse exhibition etc. By merging these new technologies in the curriculum, students’horizons are broadened. They are inspired to create more original work and develop positive self-directed learning.
  • Through out-of-classroom art activities, such as visiting art galleries, and collaboration projects with external organizations and artists, we aim to enhance students' creative experiences and broaden their horizons,

Intra-School Art Competitions and Activities

a. Broadening horizons and enhancing confidence through carnival performances

Each year, through collaborating with large-scale art organizations, students are able to broaden their horizons and experience different art cultures. We have participated in the performance project of "Standard Chartered Art and Fun Carnival 2022" this year. Students spent nearly eighteen hours preparing props and mixed costumes for the performance. This event not only allows students to acquire a lot of artistic knowledge and skills, but also enables them to learn cooperation, perseverance, and courage. It is believed that this "unique learning experience" will become precious memories on their growth journey and provide comprehensive learning experiences for students outside of the classroom.

b.Unlimited potential, diverse artistic platforms and activities

In order to boost students' self-confidence and creativity, the visual arts subject incorporates diverse art activities, competitions, and performance opportunities for students to showcase their various talents, thereby enhancing their sense of achievement.

  1. Keeping up with technology, optimizing multimedia teaching resources, and enhancing students’ self-directed learning

Along with the development of information technology, tablet drawing programs (Sketchbook, FlipaClip) and assistive electronic teaching programs (Nearpod, Padlet) are incorporated into the school-based visual art curriculum in the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) courses. Additionally, advanced electronic art projects in the Visual Arts Elite Class helps to nurture VA elites’ creativity. For example, we have collaborated with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) elite to organize AR (Augmented Reality) art technology experiential activities. Furthermore, we introduce students to new media and software, such as operating virtual reality exhibitions, to promote their development.

  1. Sister school activity between Hong Kong and mainland China: Ceramic art experience

This year, an inter-school art experience activity with our sister school - Huizhou First Primary School in mainland China was held through online classes. Students from both regions learn and create different animal-shaped decorations using clay. In the lessons, students demonstrated active learning and attentiveness as they listened carefully to the instructor's guidance online. Students from both sides enjoyed the process of making interesting and unique ceramic artworks.

e.Ongoing teacher art training about new art forms, to keep up with new teaching strategies

In order to effectively enhance teachers' various creative teaching strategies and their preparation for art activities, there are regular teachers’ workshops and seminars each year. For example, this year, we held workshops on sand painting, digital drawing, and mandala drawing to broaden teachers' knowledge and understanding of art and media, thereby improving visual arts lesson qualities.
